Anne Chanson makes large abstract oil paintings that have the qualities of grand landscape and the natural world, without being remotely illustrative.
Without speaking a representational language, the paintings convey vast ecologies and atmospheres. Without traditional words, they are nonetheless definitive: approaching a shore, overlooking a sweeping valley, getting damp in a heavy mist. Their detail talks tangled roots, dirty sea foam, or other natural incidents. Yet pinning them down is a fugitive cause.
